Biography:

Deborah French, Ph.D., Research Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

As Director of the human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) core facility within the Center for Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, our mission is to provide expertise and quality-control reagents for culture and differentiation of iPSCs and human embryonic stem cells (hESC) to the research communities. We have established standardized protocols to: 1) Propagate human ESC and iPSC lines, monitor for maintenance of the pluripotent state and distribute these lines to investigators; 2) Differentiate hESCs and iPSCs into the various germ layers and their derivative tissues under controlled, serum-free conditions with defined cytokines; and 3) Generate iPSCs from fibroblasts and blood cells obtained from human subjects using integrating and non-integrating reprogramming systems. We have generated over 60 normal and disease-specific iPSC lines in which the normal reference lines are available for distribution to the research community. In addition to working with investigators to design new protocols tailored for their individualized research, we provide a hands on training course to gain expertise in the growth, maintenance, expansion, and cryopreservation of hESCs and iPSCs. Technologies for creating and manipulating ESCs/iPSCs are evolving rapidly and we are dedicated to incorporating the latest technologies and protocols to the research community.
